What is Public Relations?
Public relations is a combination of indirect advertising and strategic marketing. It’s advertising without making the intended target (audience) feel like a commodity. Public relations is the ability to cast a good reputation on a person or a company in a naturally authentic way. A public relations consultant will fall under one of the following categories:
- Management
- Communication
- Advertising
- Media
What Does Public Relations Do
Public relations make people or companies sound or look better than they actually are. They also work to prevent negative stories or information from leaking to the public. For example, when watching the NBA on television, it’s common to see commercials of players serving the NBA’s charity organization called ‘NBA Cares’. In these commercials, players can be seen interacting with underprivileged kids. This is a master plan thought up by a public relations consultant to paint the picture that the NBA is more than just about playing basketball.
In June of 2019, David Ortiz was shot in the Dominican Republic. His previous employer, the Boston Red Sox, immediately took action and sent a medically equipped private jet to escort him to Massachusetts General Hospital for further care. In return, every news story mentioned what the Red Sox did, giving the impression that they are loyal and care for their players (both past and present) – a great example of indirect advertising.
